Michael Sullivan
San Francisco Police Dept. ADA Coordinator (Retired)
Sergeant (retired) Michael Sullivan was with the San Francisco Police Department for 32 years where he worked in patrol, administration, and as a Field Training Officer. He was the SFPD’s ADA Coordinator from 1993 to 2009, and has been honored by SF’s Mayor’s Office, SF’s Board of Supervisors, and the California Legislature for his work. While on duty at the age of 26, Michael was the victim of a violent crime and became disabled. This provides him a unique perspective as a person with a disability who is also a police officer.
As the SFPD’s ADA Coordinator, Michael was responsible for the Department’s compliance with Titles I and II and for Department training, policy development and modification, complaint investigation and requests for accommodation. He also served as Community Liaison Officer to the Disability community.
Michael provides training for law enforcement and corrections departments and nonprofits, and has prepared expert reports for both defense and plaintiffs. He continues to present twice yearly on issues in law enforcement at National Association of ADA Coordinators (NAADAC) conferences. He is a member of the ARC National Center for Criminal Justice and Disability National Advisory Council, and is a Board Member Emeritus of NAADAC.
